Phonograms with Small Movable Alphabets (4+)

Material

    • Two small boxes, each containing a set of lower case letters. (one set of letter is red and one set is blue.)

Direct Aim

    • Preparation for reading and writing.
    • Exploring words and sounds, in this case sounds like ‘sh’.

Presentation I

  1. Place lined pieces of felt on the child’s table.
  2. Place the two alphabet boxes at the top of the table.
  3. Tell the child that you are going to be working with the ‘sh’ sound.
  4. Place the ‘sh’ between the boxes with the red alphabet.  Throughout the exercise use the red letters for the ‘sh’ sound.
  5. Tell the child that you are going to write “fish”.  Complete the word with the blue alphabet.  Ask the child to think of other words that start with the sound ‘sh’.
  6. Sound the word for him and let them write it.
  7. The child can continue on his own.  He may want to work with one phonogram for as long as a week.

Teachers Presentation II

Encourage him to collect ‘families’ of words for himself and write them.  He may enjoy looking through books for them.
