  3. Using the boards only teach the name of the numerals using the three period lesson.
  4. Using the beads and boards. The child has already seen the golden tens and the symbols 20, 30, 40, etc. in the decimal system. One ‘ten’ is placed by the symbol 10. One ten = ten. Two ‘tens’ are placed by the symbol 20. Three tens = 30. Stress the number name. The child will probably know a few already.

Introduction 11-99

Material

  • The two ten boards
  • a set of loose cards from 1 to 9.
  • Nine ‘ten’ golden bead bars.
  • Ten loose golden beads.

Presentation

  1. The cards are on the child’s right, the board in the center, and the beads on the left.
  2. Take one ten and place it opposite the symbol 10 on the board.
  3. Take one bead and place it under the first bead of the ‘tens’ bar: 10 + 1 = 11, and slip the No. 1 card into the first slot of the board.
  4. Remove the card and place it upside down at the end of the board before proceeding.
  5. Take another unit and place it under the second bead of the ten bar.
  6. 10 plus two units equal 12, and place the corresponding card in the first slot again.
  7. This method is repeated up to 19, and then – one ten plus 10 units (What do ten units make?” “One ten”). 2 tens make twenty, so we’ll move them up to the next place, opposite the twenty on the board’.
  8. The process is repeated with the units, counting twenty-one,twenty-two,etc., and the units are exchanged for another ten at 30,and moved up to the ’30’ position.
  9. Continue in this way until 99 is reached.
