Exercise with the 81 Beads

Material

  • Unit Division Board
  • Green Beads
  • Green Skittles

Exercise

  1. The child helps you put in the 81 beads, 2 at a time, counting them at the same time (part of interest-activity). ‘Now we have 81 beads on the board.
  2. Let’s start dividing by 9 so we need to put out 9 green skittles. Are there any beads over? No 81 ÷ 9=9. Record it.
  3. Now divide by 8. Remove one skittle.
  4. ‘Now if we remove one of the beads-that will leave us with 80. Let’s try dividing 80 by 9. Return to the skittles. What do we get 80÷9=8, remainder 8, so we can record that answer, because the remainder is not as great as the divisor’.
  5. The child continues to work through the beads, dividing each number with 9 first.
  6. When he has been through all the beads, and recorded all he can, he may go through all the divisions he has written down, and underline all those with no remainder.
  7. Then write examples:

81÷9=9

72÷9=8

72÷8=9

64÷8=8

63÷7=9

54÷6=9
