The Phonogram Booklets of “Secrets”

Material 

    • A series of small booklets with various categories of phonograms.

Direct Aim

The child himself isolates the spelling difficulty in “foot” etc.

Presentation

  1. Show the child one of the books: e.g. “oo”. 
  2. Tell him that when there is “o” and “o” together, you have the sound “oo” as in cook, book, foot, et al.
  3. The child must be told what the sound on the cover of the book is and then he is able to read them all when he knows the “secret”.

Exercise 1

He may write each word with the two advanced movable alphabets or, with two colored pencils, he may copy them into his writing book.

‘Secrets’

The “Secret” is printed on the front page of each booklet and introduced to the child, e.g. ai is the secret sound that makes “A”.

On each page is written a word with the “Secret” of the booklet, e.g. “ai” words, with the “ai” in red.  Because the child knows the “Secret” he can read the word!

DO NOT USE TOO MANY IN THE BOOK. REMEMBER, ONE ON A PAGE.

Exercise

  1. Children love these secrets.  You can show them as a game by themselves.
  2. When they come to a word they don’t know in a book you can show them the appropriate digraph booklet, tell them “the secret ”, let them read it and then he will be able, without help, to read the word in his book!
  3. After reading a “secret booklet” he can go on a “treasure hunt” through books “collecting” words with that digraph.
