Direct aim
- To show the function of the adverb.
- To give the child an opportunity of interpreting emotions.
Indirect aim
- To give reading practice.
- To increase the vocabulary.
Age of interest
Approximately five years.
Teacher’s presentation
- Write out a verb, and give it to the child to act out as before.
- Then take another slip of paper and write an adverb on it in a different colour, and put it with the verb.
- Then the child will act out the modified action. If you write ‘hop’ at first, add ‘quickly’, or if the child has been hopping quickly change it to ‘slowly’.
- Place the symbol for the verb on top of the verb, and show the child that the orange circle is for the adverb.
Exercises
- As in presentation.
- Have cards with actions on them containing adverbs which the child can perform.
