Classified Pictures to Increase General Vocabulary
Material
A set of pictures of things with which the child is familiar; e.g. railway station, passengers, luggage, sofa, toothbrush, etc.
Direct aim
To teach the child to give the right name to the right object and to increase the vocabulary.
Age of interest
2 1/2 years onwards.
Teacher’s presentation
- Go to the shelf and take out the pictures. Set them on the table.
- Show the children the pictures one by one, asking them if they know what they are. Keep aside the pictures whose names they do not know.
- After going through all the pictures take the ones they did not know and teach them the names by the three-period lesson.

Three Period Lesson

- First period: With two or three pictures, place the pictures in front of the child. Give the name of the picture speaking it slowly and clearly. Repeat several times, saying the name each time. Ask the child if he would like to do it.
- Second period: Mix the pictures. Using the name, ask for the picture. Ask the child to say the name. If the child gives the wrong picture, go back to the ‘first period’.
- Third period: Ask the child to identify the picture. Continue to present the remaining pictures in the same fashion.
